Greek Commemorative 2 Euro Coins 2004 – Olympic Games Athens

Let’s start with the first Greek Commemorative 2 Euro Coins which is perhaps the best known, but still the least valuable one. I am referring to the one minted in 2004 on the occasion of the Olympic Games held in Athens that same year.

As we can see in the obverse, the coin shows perfectly placed in the center the representation of Mirone’s discobolus with on the left the five Olympic circles that are, as we know, the official symbol of the Olympics with the ATHENS 2004 written on it. On the right we can instead see the writing 2 EYPO which means 2 Euro. At the top is instead placed the Anthemion, a flower in stylized form that is none other than the symbol of the Mint of Athens.

Below we can find the thousandth of minting divided into two figures with the sixth star in the center. As for all the other coins around are evident the 12 stars that represent the European States.

On the reverse side the coin has the old common side, equal to the other 2 Euro coins. (The “old” Common Face i.e. the one that presents the map of the European countries with the defined borders)

Let’s move on to the obverse and the description of the National Face which explicitly recalls an ancient Greek coin. In fact it is a reinterpretation of an ancient statue. The protagonist is in fact a winged griffon vulture with the head of an eagle and the body of a lion. The reference to the ancient coin is also given by the underlying shape of the legendary creature, irregular shape typical of the minting of that period.

In the upper half, in a circle, “100 XPONIA AΠO THN ENΣΩMATΩΣH THΣ ΘPAKHΣ” preceded by the symbol of the Mint of Athens, instead in the lower half appears the inscription “ΔΗΜΟΚΡΑΤΙΑ” 2020 (100 years since the incorporation of Thrace in Greece – Hellenic Democracy – 2020). In the outer rim, on the copper and nickel part, the 12 stars form a circle like the symbol of the European countries.

The Common Face is on the reverse of the coin and is like the back of the 2 euro coins.
