Luxembourg 2 Euro Coins

These are the 2 Euro Commemorative coins minted by Luxembourg and dedicated over the years to historical figures of the country. Let’s see one by one all these Luxembourg 2 Euro Coins, we will immediately notice the propensity to portray the leading figures of the royal dynasty. There will also be commemorative coins common to all Eurozone countries, although they will be revisited according to Luxembourg’s standards.

The peculiarity of these coins is undoubtedly the fact that each of them must bear the representation of the Grand Duke, so that even those such as EMU, or Flag, EURO and Treaties of Rome bear the design common to all the countries of the European Union, but with variations that allow the royal portrait to be included. In some cases, it was necessary to resort to holograms, which made the coin particularly interesting from a numismatic point of view.

We start in 2004 and go up to 2020, and below is a table showing the circulation and value of each coin. Please note that all coins feature a finely knurled edge and a series of 6 alternating upside-down 2-numbers, separated by two stars.

Luxembourg 2 Euro Coins

Like all 2-euro coins, commemorative bimetallic coins consist of a nickel-plated brass inner ring and a cupronickel outer ring:

  • Each coin weighs 8.5 g
  • Thickness 2,2 mm
  • Diameter 25,75 mm

The majority of Luxembourgish commemorative coins are Non-Common NC, but among these are mintmark variants in Brilliant Uncirculated or Proof versions, which are less common than others and therefore rare to find.

The third 2015 coin that we are analysing is one of those common to the various countries of the European Union, produced to mark the 30th anniversary of the European Flag, which was created in 1985. Once again, the Luxembourg variant features a portrait of Grand Duke Henri. This commemorative coin was minted and issued on 10/12/2015 by the Utrecht Mint.

On the obverse side in the so-called National side, the 2 Euro Luxembourg 2015 Flag coin looks like the others issued by the different European countries. Then we see the spiral circle formed by the twelve stars that become the stylisation of twelve human figures surrounding the central Flag.At the top right is the inscription LETZEBUERG 1985-2015.

And it is right above the central flag that the hologram of Grand Duke Henri appears facing to the right. The hologram solution was also adopted previously in 2012 for the 2 euro Euro, in 2009 for the 2 euro EMU and in 2007 for the 2 euro Treaty of Rome.

Below the star in the foreground is the signature of the author Georgios Stamatopoulos, while Mint Director Brouwer’s sailing ship symbol is to the left of the mintmark, and on the right, in the cupronickel part, is the Winged Caduceus, the symbol of the Utrecht Mint.

The outer ring of the bimetallic is engraved with the twelve European stars.

On the obverse the coin shows the common face as on all other 2-euro coins.
