Brief History of Portuguese Numismatics

Portuguese numismatics has known throughout its history basically three major currencies.

The first is undoubtedly the Portuguese Real in the plural called Reis, which was the official currency of Portugal from the fifteenth century.

Specifically, this was introduced as early as 1380 and became the official Portuguese currency in 1433.
Its name derives from the monarchy and was undoubtedly a tribute to King Alfonso VI who reigned during the period of the introduction of the Real.

The Real was the official Portuguese currency until 1911 and in these years there were many variations such as the Real White and the Real Black.

From 1911 the official currency became the Escudo, which in Portuguese means “shield”. In particular, this specific currency in the singular was defined as escudo and the plural as escudos. However, over 1000 escudos the nomenclature changed to “conto”. In few words it was like that: 1000 Escudos = 1 Conto

Introduction of the Euro

On 1 January 1999, the euro officially entered into force with an exchange rate set the day before at 200.482 escudos = 1 euro.

From 1 January 2002 to 28 February 2002, a phase of dual circulation began until the escudo officially gave way to the euro.

However, it is possible to change the escudos to Euro until 30 December 2022.

After this necessary introduction concerning the history of numismatics in Portugal, we begin our journey to discover the Portugal Euro coins. In particular we will see what are the characteristics of the different coins, the materials used, the subjects depicted and everything there is to know about them.
