Specimen is a definition used to describe one or many coins produced to a particularly high standard of finish.

The term was used a lot before the 1970s.

These specimen coins are nowadays called “proof quality” coins. However recently some mints in the world produced good versions of its uncirculated coins which they call specimens coins.

We are talking about coins that have not been put into circulation and that have been treated with particular attention.

In this way their state of preservation is really good, similar to the FDC coins in quality.
