Short introduction to Euro Coin

In the year 2001, the Italian Republic has definitively abandoned the old currency, the lira coin, to move into the new coin, the euro. Collectors who had managed to accumulate a good amount of rare coins (especially rare lira coins) have therefore seen the value of their coins increase due to the end of their production.

Even the new currency, however, did not leave the collectors and numismatics lovers disappointed. There are many Piece Rare Euro Coins, especially rare 2 euro coins and rare euro cents, like the rare 2 cents.

Why so many Piece Rare Euro Coins?

The question arises: if the euro has been around for so short time, why are there rare and expensive euro coins, yet?

The fact is that the value of some Piece Rare Euro Coins, (and not only euro), is determined by a series of factors that are independent of each other. For example, some rare euro coins with a value, even if produced recently and with large circulation, are difficult to find.

This difficulty of finding some coins affects the quotation of the rare currency, either euro or some other currency, and increases its value. One example would be the rare euro 50 cents coin of 2007. Another example are some rare 2 euro coins, in particular the Finnish 2 euro commemorative coined in 2004.

Some euro coins are rare just because they have been minted in miniscule quantities and only for collectors of numismatics who guard them jealously.

Maybe some of these rare euro coins ran away from the hand and the collectors’ watchful eye and ended up in public circulation. In case we can find them we will certainly be surprised by the great value that even the euro coins can hide.

Let’s see what the rare euro coins are.

Rare Euro Cents Coins

Euro cents coins are coins with denominations of 1, 2, 5, 10, 20 and 50 euro cents. They may look like coins of little value, and indeed most are, but they are also coins that can be very interesting from a numismatic point of view.

Collectors are always on the lookout for peculiarities or minting errors, which in some cases cause the value of these insignificant coins to soar.

This is the case, for example, of the famous cents with the Mole Antonelliana, a valuable minting error which we will now discuss.

Italian Rare Cents with a Value of 2,500 Euros

Even the Euro and in particular the Italian coins give us satisfaction in the field of rare Euro coins thanks to some interesting minting errors.

Let’s talk, for example, about the much-discussed and much-sought-after euro cent (1 euro cent coin). One of these coins has a great little peculiarity:

Basically, it’s a penny with a big minting error that increases its value incredibly!

Un Centesimo Errore di Conio
One Italian Euro Cent Minting Error

This is why it is the rarest 1 Euro cent coin!

If you were lucky enough to own one, you would have no problem recognising it because the reverse of the coin depicts the Mole Antonelliana.

And you might be wondering what’s so strange about this coin with the Mole, well… it’s a minting error!

The minting error of Italian Euro cents.

In fact, the Mole Antonelliana is the symbol engraved on the 2 cent coins and not on the 1 cent coins. This is therefore an error that the Rome Mint’s staff realised a little late.

The correct print should have been the engraving of Castel del Monte. This is the cause and origin of the astronomical value of almost €2,500 at which these coins are sold and quoted today.

I forgot to mention that the number of rare cents issued by mistake is about 7000! And despite the attempt to bring back all the coins, it is estimated that at least 100 are still in some hidden drawer.

This means that there are as many as 100 cheques in circulation each one valued over 2000€ ready to be cashed free of charge.

Considering that Bolaffi owns at least 5 other 1-cent coins with the error, we should expect more interesting auctions in the coming years.

2 EURO COMMEMORATIVE COINS

Let us now talk about some of the most beautiful, interesting and exciting coins there are. We are talking about the famous 2 Euro commemorative coins, which as we have said many times, are not usually rare coins. In fact, they are produced in large quantities and well distributed throughout Europe, and they are easily available at quite affordable prices.

However, some 2-euro commemorative coins, although not rare, are considered difficult to find. There are many of these sought-after coins, for example those listed below:

2 euro commemorativi rari
Some rare 2 euro commemoratives coins
  • 2 euro commemorative of Luxembourg 2010
  • the 2 euro commemorative of Belgium 2005
  • 2 euro commemorative Netherlands 2011
  • the 2 euro commemorative coin of Germany 2006

Those listed above are all coins with a value of around €10. However, there are some coins that are even more valuable and are the ones we would all like to be lucky enough to find as change in our wallets. Here are some examples, but please note that you can find all these coins and their values on the 2 euro commemorative coin page.

As Italy is one of the European countries with the highest number of 2 Euro commemorative coins, it is good to know what these coins are and their value. You can find all our Commemorative coins on the 2 Euro Italy page.

2 Finnish Commemorative Euros 2004

Some rare euros become rare not because they are limited in number, but rather because they are subject to the market law of supply and demand.

2 Euro Rari Finlandesi molto ricercati dai collezionisti.
Finnish 2 Euro Rare much sought after by collectors.

For example, collectors have a great demand for the coin minted in Finland in 2004. The rare Finnish 2-euro was minted in 1 million copies and distributed only on Finnish territory mixed with other coins.

Hence the difficulty of finding them and the great demand from collectors who are willing to pay between 35 and 50 euros for each rare 2-euro coin.

OTHER RARE EURO COINS

Let us now enter the vast and very numerous variety of all the Euro coins of the various countries. Although the denominations remain the same as well as the common face of the coins, each country has issued and minted coins with the most diverse designs and illustrations.

Rare Euro coins from Slovenia

Among the Slovenian euro coins there are many that are classified as rare (R) and therefore very interesting for enthusiasts and collectors. You can find the complete article with all values of each year on this page: Euro Coins Slovenia.

Let us start with the Slovenian 1 euro cent coins and note that coins from the years 2010 to 2014 as well as 2017 and 2019 are considered rare and have quotations of 200 times their face value.

The most sought-after Slovenian 2-cent coins are those from 2015 and 2017, which are priced over EUR 2. The rarest and most expensive 5-cent coins from Slovenia belong to the year of minting 2018.

Among the 10 cents, apart from the common ones of 2007, we find several uncommon or rare mintings, with values up to 2,59€. Even the most quoted 20 cents reach a similar estimate.

Also of interest are the rare Slovenian 50-cent coins from 2010 to 2018 and especially the uncommon 2009 coin, which is priced at over €4.

Rare Euro coins: 1 and 2 Euro Slovenia

Among the 1-euro coins of Slovenia, the Slovenian 2011 and 2012 euros, which are priced between €5 and €7, are certainly interesting.

An example of a much-discussed coin with little value is the 2-euro Slovenia. We are talking about the 2-euro coin minted in 2007 in Slovenia.

2 euro slovenia 2007
2 Euro Slovenia 2007

They are the 2-euro coin with the highest mintage minted in Slovenia and their value is only a few cents higher than their face value. This is not the case for the same coin minted in different years since 2007. The latter are in fact all rare or uncommon and have high quotations, up to even over 12 euro.

Malta Rare Euro Coins

The coins of Malta give us many ideas to enrich our collection of interesting and sought-after European coins. We have discussed this in detail on the page dedicated to Malta Euro Coins, which we recommend you consult as it contains all the coin values.

Starting with the cents, some interesting pieces can already be seen.

For example, among the various rare coins, the 1 cent coin of Malta from 2015 has a quotation of 14 times its face value. We are not talking about big figures because they are 1 cent coins, but nevertheless it is interesting to note their rarity.

Malta’s 2 cents also have various issues that are currently rare. For example, the 2012 coin depicting the temple of Imnajdra has a value of almost 1 euro.

The Maltese 5 cents, which have the same design as the 1 and 2 cent coins, also have a number of rare mintages. Among them, the 2012 Maltese 5 cents.

The design of the 10 cent mortar coin changes and with the specimen minted in 2013 we finally exceed the 2 euro mark. Not bad for a small 10 cent coin.

The 20 cent Malta coins are practically all rare, apart from the 2008 mintage. The value, however, is slightly higher than €2, as in the case of the 2013 coin.

The 50 cents of Malta are almost all rare euro coins but do not have particularly high values. Not bad for those who are looking for all the coins of European countries and need to complete their collection.

Rare Euro coins: 1 Euro coin and 2 Euro coin Malta

The 1 euro coins of Malta, apart from the 2016 and 2008 coins, are all rare euro coins. Quotations are interesting and for perfect coins they reach almost 7 times the face value.

Greek Euro coins are very recognisable perhaps because, as with the Greek 1 euro and 2 euro coins, they refer to and depict images relating to the mythology of Greece. Greece’s 1 cent coins are, alas, not rare euro coins. In fact, all issues are common and very high in number. However, only the Brilliant Uncirculated issues are very well priced and have values around 1 euro.

The same story applies to the Greek 2 cents. They are common coins but are worth about 1 euro if in mint condition. To be noted the 2 euro cents Greece of 2003 that are worth 2 euro if in mint condition.

Greek 5 cents are starting to be interesting. Some uncommon coinage is valued at 7 euro. Others are even rare (R2) and therefore highly sought after.

Speaking of the 10 euro cents, it should be known that they were created in two different series. The first series is the one that has more relevance as far as quotations are concerned, some of them reaching 8 euro. The second series sees some rare mints (R2) with only a few thousand examples and therefore very sought after.

Among the Greek 20 euro cent coins, the uncommon mints of the first series are interesting, reaching a value of 8 euro per example in mint condition. There are also many rare coins in the second series.

Also interesting are the 50 cents of Greece, which, like the 20 cents, have valuations of around €6.50 in the first series in mint condition and boast many rare euro coins in the second series.

Rare Euro coins: Greek 1 euro coin and 2 Euro coins

Many of these coins are rare and strangely, even the older common coins are valued highly. In particular, they are worth 200 times their face value.

Even the two euro cents of Cyprus, if in perfect condition and if of the year of minting 2008 – 2009 – 2010 are worth 100 times their face value.

Of the 5 cent coins we know that from 2013 to 2018 they are considered rare (R) and that the 2008 coins are worth 1 euro if kept in perfect condition.

In the 10 cents, the design changes but the rarities remain more or less the same. From 2013 onwards they are considered rare coins.
